Parade of Books!

1st and 2nd graders love to read! Today the dressed up as their favorite book character and held a parade of books to share their love of reading with their fellow school mates. Thank you to our 1st and 2nd grade parents for helping your child create such unique costumes and for coming out to show your support!

8th grade hosts bake sale to help raise funds for their 8th grade trip! 

Students and their families got together to bake delicious treats for the 8th grade annual bake sale. All funds go towards the 8th grade class trip. Students enjoy a cruise ride before heading to the Enchanted Castle Family Entertainment Complex and Restaurant where they enjoy a fun packed night. Thank you to all of our parents and staff who help make this a huge success every year. 

Estudiantes y sus familias se reunieron para hornear deliciosas golosinas para la venta de pasteles anual de 8vo grado. Todos los fondos van hacia el viaje de la clase de 8vo grado. Los estudiantes disfrutan de un paseo en crucero antes de dirigirse al Castillo Encantado donde  disfrutan de una noche de diversión. ¡Gracias a todos los padres y el personal que ayudan a hacer este evento un gran éxito cada año!

 Caring for God'S Creation 

        OLG's seventh graders created multimedia projects that reflected what Caring for God's Creation meant to them. Some students' pieces revolved around the need for an environmentally friendly world, being active in our faith and helping one another prosper. 

Cuidar la creación de Dios

        Alumnos de séptimo grado de OLG crearon proyectos usando varias formas de arte que reflejaban lo que ellos piensan que significa Cuidar la creación de Dios. Algunas piezas de arte de los estudiantes giraban en torno a la necesidad de un mundo respetuoso del medio ambiente, ser activo en nuestra fe y ayudándose unos a otros a prosperar.

Lawyers visit 8th grade!

Lawyers from AT&T Services, Inc. paid a visit to our 8th grade students and taught them a little bit about our judicial system and how to develop and make your argument. Students were given a scenerio and they had to choose a side and develop an argument. Take a look at how OLG students did.

7th and 8th Grade Celebrate Day of the Dead 

 

 OLG's 7th and 8th grade students spent the month of October creating altars for their Day of the Dead celebration. Students were able to honor and remember loved ones, friends or heroes/heroines who have passed away by creating altars that reminded them of those individuals. Students were also asked to write essays where they could tell others about that special person and explain what the details on their altars meant. They shared their creations with their families and classmates by planning a small Day of the Dead celebration in their classrooms.

Los estudiantes de 7mo y 8vo grado pasaron el mes de octubre creando altares para celebrar el Día de los Muertos. Los estudiantes honoraron y recordaron a los seres queridos, amigos o héroes / heroínas que han fallecido por la creación de altares que les recordaban a esos individuos. También se les pidió a los estudiantes a escribir ensayos donde podían contar a otros acerca de esa persona especial y explicar el significado de los detalles de sus altares. Compartieron sus creaciones con sus familias y compañeros de clase en una pequeña celebración de los Día de los Muertos que ellos planearon en sus aulas.

  OLG's class of 2015 put on two wonderful performances for their classmates today. They performed The Sneetches by Dr. Seuss for students in grade pre-k - 3rd and The Diary of Anne Frank for students in 4-8th grade. Job well done, 8th grade!

Urban Gateways Fine Arts Program

For the past  couple of weeks, students in grades K-8 have been learning how to make masks thanks to the Urban Gateways Fine Arts Program. Students got to custom design and create their own masks that they now get to share with family and friends.

 Mock Trial

  For several weeks, Mrs. Williams and Mrs. Krill have been working with students after school, teaching them about the judicial system. To conclude their study, the students presented a mock trial to the students in grades 7 and 8. 

Students learned what it was like to be part of and represent the plaintiff side, defendant side and the jury.

       Award-Winning Students!

Congratulations to the students who recently succeeded in a statewide essay competition! Our 8th grade students participated in the "Do the Write Thing" essay contest. Among the 100 finalists who will be honored at an awards ceremony & dinner on May 5 are eight students from OLG: Melanie Chavez, Kenneth Garcia, Tammar Martinez, Justin Ortiz, Jordy Peralta, Natalie Perez, Ricky Rivera, and Valerie Vega.

Abner De la Rosa, a 6th grade student, has been chosen as one of the 12 sixth grade finalists in the State of Illinois in the Illinois Fatherhood Essay Contest. He will be recognized on May 9, at a White Sox game.

¡Felicidades a los estudiantes que recientemente triunfaron en las competencias de composiciones! Nuestros estudiantes de 8 grado participaron en el concurso de composición "Do the Write Thing" entre los 100 finalistas que serán honrados en la cena y ceremonia de premios, el 5 de mayo, están ocho estudiantes de OLG: Melanie Chavez, Kenneth Garcia, Tammar Martinez, Justin Ortiz, Jordy Peralta, Natalie Perez, Ricky Rivera, y Valerie Vega.

7th graders were paired with 3rd graders in order to complete Valentine's Day themed crossword puzzles and word searches!

Students in 7th grade took part in various learning stations that were designed to show them what it was like to live in Jesus' time. They learned all about farming, crop growing & religious festivals, The Sabbatical Year, weaving and they even got to experience what it may have been like to be a stone carver by carving different shapes into soap bars!

Los alumnos de séptimo grado participaron en diferentes estaciones de aprendizaje que fueron diseñadas para mostrarles lo que era vivir en la época de Jesús. ¡Ellos aprendieron todo sobre la agricultura, fiestas religiosas, el Año Sabático, el tejido e incluso llegaron a experimentar lo que pudo haber sido ser un tallador de piedra tallando diferentes formas en barras de jabón!

Saving With Randy and Mandy

A Lesson in Financial Literacy

2nd grade students learned all about savings with the help of the Saving With Mandy and Randy curriculum supplement program. Students engaged in conversations regarding financial responsibility such as the difference between a want and a need as well as what the process of opening a savings account looks like. 

Students strengthened their skills in math as they were given a workbook to complete that helped them practice coin identification,adding and subtracting cents and dollars, and completing a deposit ticket for a savings account.

Una Lección en la Responsabilidad Financiera

Estudiantes de 2do grado aprendieron todo sobre el ahorro con la ayuda del programa de suplemento currículo Ahorro Con Mandy y Randy. Los estudiantes participaron en conversaciones relativas a la responsabilidad financiera, como la diferencia entre un deseo y una necesidad, así como lo que es el proceso de apertura de una cuenta de ahorros.

Los estudiantes fortalecieron sus habilidades en matemáticas, ya que se les dio un libro de trabajo para completar que les ayudó practicar la identificación de monedas, sumar y restar centavos y dólares, y completar un boleto de depósito para una cuenta de ahorros.

8th grade students learned about the productivity of various fruits by counting the number of seeds each fruit contained. They were asked to construct a hypothesis (guess which fruit had the most seeds), test their hypothesis (count the seeds), document and analyze their data to draw a conclusion that they could communicate to their classmates.

Estudiantes de octavo grado aprendieron sobre la productividad contando cuantas semillas se encuentran en diferentes frutas. Se les pidió que construyeran un hipótesis (¿cuál fruta tendrá la mayoría de las semillas?), probar su hipótesis (contar las semillas), documentar y analizar sus datos para llegar a una conclusión que puedan comunicar con sus compañeros de clase.

     Money Savvy Financial Literacy Program

OLG students kicked off Money Savvy's Financial Literacy Program with the help of The Private Bank employees on Friday, November 11, 2014. Students in grades K-8 engaged in finance activities and conversations surrounding savings accounts, investing, banking, donating and more. OLG would like to thank The Big Shoulders Fund for providing this unique opportunity to OLG students over the years. Thanks too, to The Private Bank employees. You have all truly made a difference in our students' lives.

Los estudiantes de OLG iniciaron el programa de educación financiera de Money Savvy con la ayuda de los empleados de The Private Bank el viernes 11 de noviembre de 2014. Estudiantes en los grados K - 8 participaron en actividades y conversaciones sobre cuentas de ahorro, la inversión, el banco, la donación y más. OLG quisiera agradecer al Fondo Big Shoulders por proporcionar esta oportunidad única para los estudiantes de OLG. Gracias también, a los empleados de The Private Bank. Han hecho una gran diferencia en las vidas de nuestros estudiantes.

 7th graders  get a feel of what it was like to be Michaelangelo and paint the Sistine Chapel Ceiling when they were asked to make their own works of art laying on their backs. It took Michaelangelo 4 years to complete his masterpiece!

Lawyers Steve Mead and Joanna Moscow from AT&T Services, Inc. paid a visit to our 8th grade students and shared their knowledge of the judicial system. Students were presented with a rule and asked to gather in groups to think of ways this particular rule could be amended in order to account for different scenerios.

Abogados en el salón de clases de 8vo grado!

Abogados por un día!

Abogados Steve Mead y Joanna Moscow de AT&T Services, Inc. visitaron a nuestros estudiantes de 8vo grado y compartieron su conocimiento del sistema judicial. Los estudiantes se presentaron con una regla y se les pidió reunirse en grupos para pensar en formas que esta regla en particular podría ser modificada para satisfacer scenerios diferentes.
